History of health sport in Luxembourg
2026
On January 15th, the pilot project for prescribing physical activity was launched. The national pilot project for prescribing physical activity has been launched in Luxembourg. Participating physicians can now prescribe physical activity as part of the care pathway for people with chronic illnesses.
2025
In 2025, the Fédération Luxembourgeoise des Associations de Sport de Santé (FLASS) participated in the implementation of the national pilot project for prescribing physical activity in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Social Security, Sports, and several institutional partners. Within this framework, 73 physicians were trained in prescribing physical activity.
2024
On August 16, the Federation participated in a round table dedicated to the prescription of physical activity and sport-health, organized as part of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, in the presence of ministers Georges Mischo and Martine Deprez.
Michael Worth, Charles Delagardelle, Axel Urhausen, Daniel Theisen, and Alexis Lion have published a scientific study on prescribing physical activity. This study presents the development of a consensus-based physical activity prescription tool for Luxembourgish physicians.
On 31 July, the Cardiovascular-Trail in Walferdange was inaugurated, a walking route designed for people with cardiovascular and chronic diseases who wish to practice physical activity independently.
On July 10, the Federation was appointed to a working group of the conseil scientifique du domaine de la santé to draft a recommendation concerning physical activity and cardiovascular diseases.
2023
On November 28, the Sport-Health training course was launched at INAPS for sports coaches to strengthen their skills in supporting people with chronic diseases.
On November 6, the Federation was appointed as a member of the Comité national du Plan National des Maladies Cardio-Neurovasculaires.
2021
On March 17, the Federation participated in the Gesondheetsdësch to present its vision of health-related sport.
On November 23, a second national round table is organised by the Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte (Œuvre) dedicated to the role of physical activity for physical, mental and social health.
2020
Publication of the white paper concerning the past, present and future of health sport in Luxembourg, outlining the contours of the Luxembourg model of physical activity prescription.
2019
In agreement with the Œuvre and the LIH, the federation took over all Sport-Santé’s activities and now manages the website sport-sante.lu as well as all communication around the Sport-Santé label.
In September 2019, the federation joined the HEPA Europe network which works for better health and well-being through increased physical activity in the WHO European Region.
2018
In January 2018, the federation obtained from the Ministry of Health the credits necessary to reimburse the services of persons supervising the therapeutic physical activity classes offered by its members and to subsidize a position of Executive Officer for the coordination, promotion, training and research in health sport.
In June 2018, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Social Security launched (in collaboration with the federation, the Œuvre and the LIH) the PNTSS, as well as its “Sport-Santé 2018” national campaign which included the broadcasting of TV spots on RTL and by sending a letter including flyers and actimeters to more than 2,600 general practitioners and dentists working in Luxembourg.
2017
In 2017, the Œuvre, the LIH and the federation prepared a National Therapeutic Sports-Health Program (PNTSS) and presented it to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Sports. The PNTSS contains four axes: coordination, promotion, training, research.
The PNTSS aims to:
to support the organization of therapeutic physical activities offered to patients with chronic diseases,
to promote these physical activities to healthcare professionals, patients and the general public by carrying out adapted awareness campaigns,
create suitable training for monitors of therapeutic physical activities and for healthcare professionals who will educate patients,
- to stimulate scientific research in the field of therapeutic physical activity.
2016
In March 2016, the Fédération Luxembourgeoise des Associations de Sport de Santé (FLASS) was created, thanks to the network developed within the framework of the Sport-Santé project, to coordinate, develop and promote health sport.
2015
In April 2015, the sport-sante.lu website was launched. The website contains theoretical and practical information concerning health sport.
2012
The Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte (the Œuvre) organized a round table bringing together players in the sports sector who identified the needs relating to health sport. Following this round table and thanks to the financial support and commitment of the Œuvre, the realization of the Sport-Santé project was entrusted to the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory of the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) which has made it possible to take many steps to increase the number of participants in therapeutic physical activity classes.
1992
The Association Luxembourgeoise des Groupes Sportifs pour Cardiaques (ALGSC) and the Ministry of Health signed an agreement for the reimbursement of the benefits of the people who supervise the therapeutic physical activity classes.
1984
Health sport was initiated in Luxembourg in 1984 with the creation of the Association Luxembourgeoise des Groupes Sportifs pour Cardiaques (ALGSC) by cardiologists and cardiac patients to offer a therapeutic physical activity, in particular following phase II of cardiac rehabilitation.
Since then, the health sport has developed gradually and classes of therapeutic physical activity have emerged in recent decades for many other chronic diseases such as obesity and oncological, neurological, rare, orthopedic and psychosomatic diseases. These classes have developed in parallel with scientific discoveries regarding the health benefits of physical activity for people with chronic diseases.
